Any of you cut your dogs hair yourself?

Any of you groom/cut your dog's hair yourself?

I am thinking of taking clippers to my dog's hair myself. I like my dog's hair kinda log so I was thinking of using a number 4.

Any suggestions about cutting, clippering, cleanup, anything about making it easy for me and my puppy?

thanks!

There are plenty of books and videos on grooming your own dog. It will give you an idea where to start and teach you how to do it so that no one gets hurt :)

Unless you know what your doing then put the clippers away!!!

I do my own Goldens feet from time to time but it took me a long time to learn how to do it correctly!

We groom our own dogs, but it took time to learn how to do it correctly. First, we had to learn what a properly groomed example of our breed should look like. Next, we were shown what tools we needed and how to use them correctly. Last, we had to practice over and over until we got it right. There were some bad cuts on occasion, but we learned from that.

By the way, we learned from our breeders, and from other folks who exhibit our breed at dog shows.

i use to cut my cockers hair when he was alive..it was fun..bonded us but i would advise wearing a face mask because the hair tends to get ALL over you and up into your nose so you are constantly brushing your arm at your nose..the hair will also make you itchy..but it is fun!!

make sure you do it outside or on a hard floor..not carpet..for easy clean up.

I've owned several dogs that I cut the hair on and I cut my own hair.

The thing to do is educate yourself on how to do it by reading some library books, checking out items you can find online and any videos you can get your hands on.

Then be prepared to make some mistakes along the way. You won't get it right until about the 7th or 8th time you do it. So my suggestion would be to always cut it longer than you normally would. That way if you mess up, a groomer can even things out and let you know what you didn wrong.

The dogs I've owned that I cut myself were toy poodles, cocker spaniels and mutts. I wasn't into showing and I lived in warm climates, so field cuts were the order of the day. I spen alot of scissor time on the mutts and poodles.

If you can get your hand on a FlowBee, do so. The dogs love the cool feeling if and when they get used to the noise the vacuum makes.

At any rate, good luck.

yea i do it all the tim ein the summer. cuz we have a chow and we shave her. we shave her outside and then we pick up the pieces of hair that is in clumps or what we can see. when u cut ur dogs hair dont go all the way down to the skin. cuz it will cut ur dogs skin. and we also bring her to the groomers to get her done.
