A question about waxing--is it more painful with longer hair?

I am getting my chest and bikini area waxed before heading to the beach next weekend. Would it be less painful if I go over those areas with clippers first to make the hair a little shorter? The last time I got it done it was very painful.

Also, Is there anything I can do to make it less painful, such as taking painkillers beforehand?

Yes, trim first. The shorter the hair is, the less tension there is on the follicle as it is being pulled out. At the same time, it has to be 1/4" long in order to be pulled out by the wax, so be careful not to go too short! But definitely, yes, it hurts less if it is shorter.

Also, most salons offer some variant of skin-number that you can put on about 30 minutes before getting waxed, so you cannot feel it as much. Painkillers won't really do much for the kind of pain you get from getting waxed, but topical numbing creams work well. I have one called "No Scream Cream", and it works like a charm! Just ask your salon and I'm sure they can either provide you with one or tell you where to get one. :)

pain from waxing is usually dependent on thickness of roots of hair

Trim the hair first, then do it. Trust me, after the first few times, it doesn't hurt. It really isn't that bad.

The hair lenght does not matter, either way it will be painful, hair is hair.

But take two aspirin before going.

You can trim your hair but do not too short otherwise the wax will not pull all of the hair out and you will have stubble. Try taking Tylenol or Advil at least 1 hr before you go. With each waxing your hair will grow in finer and your skin will be less sensitive.
