Are animal clippers any different than human clippers?

Hi. I have a few animals and out of the few, I get my dog clipped/groomed (lab, shepard, chow mix). I also have a cat, is it ok to clip a cat? I adopted my older cat and he has constant hair ball coughing fits. I tried special food and other tricks but nothing worked, so I am thinking now that maybe I should cut his hair too (he is a long haired cat).

I have a cheap pair of conair electric clippers (for people) and it died out while using it on my dog. The clippers are old so I'm wondering if they just stopped working because they were old or is it because you just cant do long animal hair/fur with human clippers? I would like to do this myself because it would save me $50 for each animal. Any suggestions? Thanks!

yes they are the same. they only call them animal clippers at the pet stores and other places so they can charge you more.

Clippers used for animals, horses specifically, tend to be quieter running so as not to spook or frighten the animal. There's not really a huge difference, but I would invest in some clippers intended for animals, expecially since it sounds like your current one just died.

It's perfectly fine to clip a cat. Many people with long haired cats clip them to avoid mats and to keep them cool in hot weather.

Old clippers belong in the trash. They will only pull the fur and hurt the animal. Yes you can use human clippers on dogs but please buy new ones and keep it cleaned and sharp. If the dogs hair is that long, first try using scissors first and then the clippers. Cat clippers. LOL no no really. Why not try to comb or brush more often. That will help with hairballs. Also there is a supplement that you can add to her food to keep the hairball problem to a minimum. Good luck

To be able to cut pets hair well, you've got to buy clippers that are over $30.

I clip my goats for show. I got a pair of pet clippers at walmart for only $30. Your clippers might of quit working b/c they overheated. With animals you need to get something called blade ice. you can get it at tractor supply for about $6. it lasts forever. dont use people clippers on pets. They can be loud and can spook them. Spray the clipper blade when it gets hot. With my goats, usually ever 45 secs. to min. Hope it helps. P.S I like the Wahl brand or Oster.

How about GROOMING the cat? There's no need to cut a cat's fur if you keep it groomed. Get a steel toothed comb and comb out the loose undercoat. The more you comb, the less hair that'll come out. Once you get it under control you can go several days without combing. Also get the cat a hairball remedy or a dab of Vaseline that will help ease out any hairballs.

As for electric clippers I would think animal fur is much thicker than human hair so yes it'd probably burn it out. http://www.drsfostersmithcom.com has quite affordable grooming supplies. I've never heard of someone clipping a German Shepherd or Lab, though. You probably just need to brush and comb them as well.

They are different. Human clippers (or so I find) tend to drag on animal fur/hair rather than cutting through it properly. While you don't need professional quality clippers, avoid the cheap ones- the blades blunt in no time and the darn things frequently don't work well in the first place. And I'm guessing that as your dog has shepherd and chow, s/he probably has a pretty long, thick coat?

Do you brush your cat regularly to remove all his loose fur? In theory, there's no reason why you can't clip him too, but it may prove much harder in practice!
