Hi there well ok the best thing to do is to bring your shih-tzu to the groomer so you know that he will be taken care of. It is also a lot safer( I've been grooming for 9 yrs now). But if you really want to get clippers find ANDIS 2 speed, they will cost about $100.00 to $120.00. The ones you get at most pet stores like Petco won't hold up. Don't give him a bath that will only matt him up more. I do think the best thing to do is bring him to the groomers. Hope this help remember those matts hurt him so do what you have to do and soon don't let the matts get worse.

I would suggest you take it to a professional groomer who can take their time and has the materials to cut out the mats or shave the dog all together and start over.

it may cost you some money but your best bet is to take your poor little baby to a groomer so that they can do it safely...it is very easy to accidently cut their skin when the hair is matted unless you are a professional.

Good Luck and Hugs to Puppy!

I would definitely take that poor thang to the groomer... They would be able to get him cleaned up.... My maltise loves the groomer...

I agree with the previous answer- matted fur is not a wise choice to be treated necessarily with clippers, as they will pull the hair and it may cause the dog discomfort. However, I have always simply taken scissors and carefully cut the mats to the extent where I have not tugged anymore on the skin than is necessary. If you do decide to use clippers after making sure the mats are not going to be an issue, Oster brand clippers have always worked for me, but make sure that they don't overheat (there are coolants and lubricants you can purchase to avoid this). Hope that was of some help! But, if you can, I would still advise taking the dog to a professional groomer that has dealt with mats and knows how to clean your dog up! =)

you might be better off to go to a pro. to get the job done....when it is very matted you can injure your dog if you do not clip it right....c'mon you left him for 3 weeks he deserves a spa treatment!

the good clippers will cost you about $200

I would suggest taking her to a dog groomer.

Good luck but try to get it done soon as the matted hair can pull on the skin and cause skin problems

I groom my shih-tzu. I have a set of clippers I bought at Target. Same as for use on human hair. About 14.99 for the kit. Keep them adjusted so they don,t clatter. That sound makes my dog, BooBoo, mad. They work great. We also put him up off the ground on an ironing board or table to make it easier. It works great, and people where we live often ask us what groomer we use. LOL

Take your dog to a professional groomer since you did not comb your dog's hair. The professional groomer knows what to do and what equipment to cut the hair with, if you do it at home there could be problems. If you let it go longer that is animal cruelty, I have seen cases like that on Animal Planet's shows the ones that shows the NYC ones, and Detroit too. Again take it to a professional groomer!!!!!

I had a Lhaso/poodle mix years ago and we lived in the country and he loved to run around the property. In the summer his fur got matted with all sorts of weeds and things. I cut his hair with a pair of scissors. Cut it about as close as it can get and kept it short until the fall. Sure it wasn't a professional cut but he looked fone to me and could enjoy his frolicing around our farm.

I have Shih Tzus and other breeds that have long hair coats.I've found that the Andis 2 speed clippers are the best for this job as they're much quiter that the Oster clippers.Use a # 7 blade and first clip the hair short around top of neck area with scissors, then place your clippers there to start and go down top of back area, then do sides. If the pet has any matts you may try and cut them off,but be careful and not get too close to skin.Check your clippers often,as some types get very hot,so let them cool before continueing.I purchased mine at the site below for $129.00 at http://www.revivalanimal.com

I bought clippers in the pet department of Walmart. They were less than $20 and work really good on my shih tzu. You would first need to trim out the matts carefully and then use the clippers to even it all out. I have taken my dog to a professional groomer a couple of times and she was not cooperative with them. She stayed really calm when I put her on the kitchen table for clipping. Also, it isn't animal abuse that your dog has matts, it's characteristic of the breed. Good luck.
