It keeps some but you have to remember that whatever angle you are going at cutting your hair will make a difference too. Some people slide it along the scalp which tends to make the hair shorter than say if you were to tip the cutters up some to make like a 90 degree angle or something then your hair would be longer. Also look at the number on the number 4 and in the book it should tell you how long your hair would actually end up like. The #4 that I use when cutting hair is 1/2 inch. So the hair that is left on the head will be 1/2 inch long.
