What do the grades mean in the case of hair clippers?

I went to the barber's the other day and she (yes she!) didn't know what specific length the grades represented (ie number 2 etc). What length of hair - in mm - do they leave you with?

She does a good cut though!

They are graded in eighths of an inch. So a number 1 is 1/8 inch and a number 4 is 4/8,or half an inch.

Lower the number the more hair they remove.

I have Number 1 and this leaves a length of around 4-5 mm.
