I have only shaved a dog once with a blade guard, and I used a 3/4 inch guard on his entire body. I did not shave his face, legs, or tail. I would think that you may want a shorter size on the face (but not that much shorter) if it is a dog with long facial hair, but you wouldn't on the legs.

Do not use human clippers on a dog!! They are not made for the hair, dog hair is rougher than human hair. I've heard so many people who tried it and destroyed their clippers quickly. Just go to a pet store buy some clippers and an instructional dvd. Of course no matter what you decide to do you will have to do the maintenance on your clippers or you'll have to buy new ones or repair the old ones which can be expensive in itself.
