I want to shave my dog for the summer. I know his coat keeps him cool, but I looked it up and it says to shave it one inch. I was going to take him to the groomers, but then I was wondering if I could shave him with men's hair clippers with the one inch cartridge on it. He is very patient and well behaved. I know he will let me do it, but I still didn't know if that was okay. If you guys have any suggestions or comments, I'd really appreciate!!!!!

Please do not shave your dog. The long coat protects against sunburn, heat and parasites, including fleas.
I have never shaved my Chows. They are double-coated. They are furry and look like huge Pomeranians.
Anyway, they are happier with their insulation, and look stupid with lion cuts.
Yes, you can use regular hair clippers...but your dog will look like he has been home clipped. It takes months to grow out...

I have tried and failed. Regular clippers don't seem to take on the texture of the hair like the clippers you can get at the pet shop or feed store.

Always cut in the direction the hair grows. This reduces the risk of slicing your dog. Also, what breed of dog do you have? What kind of hair coat is it that you are grooming?

Ya it is fine there is no real differents between the two clipers. Just be carful not to go to fast when shaving

What kind of dog do you have? We have a husky and tried to use regular clippers on him, but they did not work. We had to go to a pet store and buy dog clippers. If your dog's fur is not that thick, I don't see why regular clippers would not work, but if you have a cold weather dog that has very thick fur, I would go with the dog clippers.

yes! it can be done! we do it all the time at home, we have a bishon frise........(sorta like a poodle)well, whenever we give her a bath, she shaves much much better than when she is dirty....... or if you don`t want to deal with the hassle of it all, then take your pet to the groomers.............. if you do it your self,and depending on what kind of coat your pet has, brush out all knots first in his coat........ then begin with your clipper job......... good luck!!!!!!!!

You can, but it's not really the best. You have to remember that dog's hair is much courser than human's hair normaly. Dogs still grow hair that is meant to protect them in the cold, so it comes out with a much more thick, wirey texture. Human hair, is much more finer by comparison. I have done this in the past and the clippers quit halfway thru, and kept getting tangled.

we need to know what breed of dog you have. for the vast majority of dogs, those clippers just don't have the power to do it. you need pet clippers, and not the cheapo ones, those are just as bad. talk to the groomer about what you would need for your dog. using underpowered and/or dull equipment can be painful for your pet, especially if you're not experienced.

yes, i use those on my dog all the time, just make sure you put an extension on it so it doesn't get too close to the skin.

Yes you can shave your dog with regular clippers, I did my dog this year with them. The only thing is that you have to keep the blades oiled, sometimes you have to do it three or four times in one session. My dog was well behaved but his undercoat was so thick that it took me three days to finish clipping him.

I wouldn't shave that dog at all, it was meant to have longer hair.. But if you do, regular hair clippers will NOT cut through that coat. I have to use expensive professional clippers and different size blades.

You can use them, the problem that may occur is that "people" clippers tend to have the teeth of the blades too close together for fur. The tend to jam up easily and pull on the hair causing discomfort.

People hair clippers do not work well on dogs. I did use a people Flowbee on my dog. It gives you control of the length, but be careful that an ear or tail doesn't get sucked in.

okay first of all, i want to say that if people dont REALLY know the answer to a question they should just not answer. not one person who has responded to your question has said anything that comes even close to being right.
i am a professional dog groomer and i have your answer.
no, you cannot use regular human clippers, they are not designed for dog fur. there is a difference.
secondly, unless you have been TRAINED how to cut canine fur, then you should NOT even attempt to do anything with it besides brush it. i have seen so many horrible haircuts and some bad cuts (like skin cuts) that dogs have sustained due to their owners or owners friends thinking that they know what theyre doing. one person on here said that you could always just use sissors--wrong. you can do serious damage to a dog if you dont know what youre doing.
you could have the most patient dog in the world, but when those clippers turn on and touch the dog, they can turn into a totally different animal. my suggestion to you is to take him/her to a professional groomer or to learn HOW TO become a dog groomer before you ever come near a dog with clippers/sissors. im not trying to sound mean, im just trying to save you from giving your dog a bad haircut, or even worse, hurting him. you wouldnt want that. please take this advice seriously. no human clippers and no sissors (unless you know what youre doing).

Human clippers don't have the speed required to get through most thick coated breeds. Also the comment on keeping the blade oiled, that is true, but better yet you need to keep the blade cool with a blade wash (Kool Lu be). It usually will take the whole fam damnly to get a large dog groomed at home....I say take it to a professional groomer...your time is money, right??

With a dog this big, I would let someone Else do it .Menes hair clippers will work but, they get hot and you have to stop so they can cool. I've tried this. It's allot of work. It took me all day. sometimes people combs want go through dogs hair.If your determined to do this task maybe you should go to Wal-Mart and get you some dog clippers.This will be better on you and your pet.Good luck and be careful. Don't get it too short. Dogs can sunburn!

Take him to the groomers. You need a good trimmer made for dogs. I tried to trim Jack and boy what a hatch it job !!! He was patient and docile, but looked really bad after I tried to clip him. Watch the groomers as they do it.. then you can do it on your own.

You could, but your clippers would probably break. I have a Newfoundland/chow mix, I like to call him a chowfoundland LOL. I tried to shave him with my boyfriends clippers once. I still get teased about it LOL. What a mess. You can buy clippers for dogs at Petsmart, Pet supplies plus, etc.
If you do decide to shave be sure you leave enough hair so your dog does not get a sun burn. It is actually better if you leave the hair %26amp; keep it brushed out, free of matts. Dogs coats sort of work like air conditioning when free of tangles.
